2013 Great State of Maine Air Show Canceled
BRUNSWICK, Maine – Due to the uncertainty associated with sequestration, the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority has decided to cancel the 2013 Great State of Maine Air Show, previously scheduled for September 14-15.
On March 5, the Under Secretary of the Department of Defense issued a memo ordering “all aerial demonstrations, including flyovers, jump team demonstrations, and participation in civilian air shows and military open houses will cease as of April 1, 2013.”
“This was a difficult decision,” said Steve Levesque, MRRA Executive Director. “The Great State of Maine Air Show has traditionally been a patriotic, family-friendly event allowing us to Honor Those Who Serve. Additionally it has become a community-focused event inciting wonder in the magic of flight and highlighting the local accessibility of the pastime and the peripheral industry and STEM educational opportunities associated with aviation.”
The Great State of Maine Air Show was scheduled to showcase the US Navy Blue Angels, US Army Golden Knights Parachute Team as well as the Navy’s F-18 Demonstration Team. Participation by military static display aircraft and shipment of required ground support equipment would also be eliminated. To simply replace the military flying acts with talented civilian acts comes with a significant price tag as well. Statistics from the International Council of Air Shows confirm the #1 ticket sales draw for an air show is the inclusion of a major jet demonstration team, such as the Blue Angels.
“Valued sponsors of the Great State of Maine Air Show deserve to re-allocate their budgeted funds to other deserving endeavors,” said Levesque. With overwhelming support from the local community, from sponsors, to volunteer groups, to avid fans, The Great State of Maine Air Show has donated more than $85,000 in the past two years to regional charity and non-profit organizations.
“While planning for out-year Air Shows,” Levesque said, “we will continue to work with the community to use our facilities to highlight Brunswick and Brunswick Landing through trademark events such as Race the Runways and general aviation Fly-Ins.”
